The Voice of UK Plastic Surgeons
UKAAPS was formed to play a fundamental role in educating the public on the benefits and risks associated with Plastic Surgery. UKAAPS is the only UK association whose membership is only available to fully accredited plastic surgeons that practice non-surgical aesthetics and aesthetic/cosmetic surgery.
UKAAPS emphasis is always on the promotion of patient safety and the role of plastic surgeons in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. We are working with the UK’s leading insurers to ensure that all UKAAPS members have suitable insurance cover to protect patients and to collect and validate patient reported outcomes.
This data along with the support that we are providing our members to gain ISAPS membership will ensure that not only UKAAPS member’s knowledge and experience, but over 2,000 International surgeon’s material and the Aesthetic Journal will be available to our members to continue their on-going education of new methods and techniques within the Aesthetic Plastic Surgery field.
UKAAPS will develop an advisory role in the regulation of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, emphasising the qualifications and experience of UKAAPS surgeons. You can access our member’s directory to find a surgeon within your area or treatment required by clicking here.
UKAAPS Breast implant scientific conference

Following the success of the conference at the PMI Anglia Ruskin University on Wednesday 12th October it was clear that the implant manufacturers who attended to present their data are a million miles apart from the the company who stimulated the need for the conference, PIP implants. The strict manufacturing of Mentor, Nagor and Silimed will ensure that the same problems should never return to the market. Nagor has to be applauded as one of the companies who have donated a number of implants to patients who have been victims of the PIP fiasco. We were very lucky to have 2 patients at the conference who were victims of the PIP implants, the attendees were presented with their stories which included 5 minute consultations with their surgeon, followed by a sales coordinator asking for their money and signing them up on the day. They confirmed that they had chosen the surgeon for all of the wrong reasons with referral, publicity and his prices been some of the highest been quoted as to why they chose their surgeon. They also confirmed that 4 other friends had been victims of the same surgeon and implants with the same results of burst implants and one having silicon leaked into her lymph nodes.
The results showed that the manufacturers need to support these events, training of surgeons and to continue their advances in research and development of their implants to make them safer. The surgeons concluded that each implant had its own benefits dependent upon the patient requirements and skeletal structure and that no company or surgeon should use only one implant in their practise. UKAAPS will endeavour to negotiate with these 3 main manufacturers Mentor, Nagor and Silimed to ensure that each member and clinic can purchase their implants at the right price through the group purchasing power of UKAAPS to ensure that our member surgeons are not using one implant only due to minimum number requirements from suppliers.
The FDA statistics were discussed on the day and how we need to have our own register here in the UK that includes an independent body to administer the stats. The absence of Allergan was well noted on the day by all with many people feeling that this meeting was ground breaking and long overdue.

Latest News
The PIP implants scandal continues with greater publicity which will hopefully push the government into reacting to this fiasco. UKAAPS stance remains the same that if you have these implants you should have them removed or replaced as soon as possible. The implants are prone to rupture and the silicon inside is not medical grade, the replacement of a ruptured implant is much harder, takes longer and can result in 2 procedures as your surgeon may need to remove the implants and let your body recover before replacing the implants resulting in 2 procedures under general anaesthetic and greater cost. Register your PIP implants on our breast implant register and you will receive advise and a reduced fee from our members for any replacement. www.breastimplantassociation.org
